Tour of Kin to Eveleth Auditorium

Yesterday we had a tour of the 701 Adams building in Eveleth which is frequently referred to as the ‘old shirt factory’. It is true that the structure once housed two separate floors of ice, one for curling (lower) and the other for hockey. As is typical for these older structures, the construction is phenomenal in it’s capacity to withstand age and the elements.Poured Staircase

Here are a few views of some of the great rooms in the building:

Heater exhaustOf particular interest is the ceiling heating (infrared tube, quartz tube) system which was capable of heating the upper floor to 70 degrees for the film crew of the movie ‘North Country’, during the subzero February weather. It was here where many of the props for the feature were stored.

This is one option for the heating of the main floor of the Auditorium, which would be a much smaller application. If you have heating system information or solutions, contact the City or email the site (evelethauditorium@live.com) and help educate us in this challenge.

I am planning a visit to the Virginia/Hibbing/Chisholm area during the week of July 5 and would like to meet with you to discuss some opportunities for historic preservation activities in the area. As the field representative for the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota, I also work to advance the initiatives and grant programs of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. There are a few new grant opportunities I would like to share with you, and I would like to tell you about some of the Preservation Alliance’s recent legislative initiatives and our plans for starting Main Street program in 2010.

Please let me know if you would be available sometime July 6 or 7. If you have board members or volunteers that you would like to include, that would be great. (Minnesota Preservation Alliance website)

Lyric Center Family Talent Runs Deep

The Lyric Center for the Arts in Virginia Minnesota, has the benefit of a talented family in their ranks. Meet the Pellinens:

Their efforts have brought the best performances to the region covering a multitude of venues.

Kaija Pellinen displayed her theatrical, singing and strumming capabilities tonight in an intimate performance at the Lyric.

It’s a wonder where she found the gems she portrayed, Broadway style. Without such diligent college students as Kaija, what would the future of the performing arts hold?

Pictured at here is Jack, Pete, Kaija, Steve and Mary.

Kaija will provide more of her talents on the Arrowhead Arts Floating Stage in the Gilbert parade Friday evening. Come to the parade and enjoy the variety of the moving show! The parade starts at 7:30.

    Death Metal Revival in Eveleth-Virginia

How wonderful it is to announce ‘Death Metal’ has resurrected itself in the Quad Cities!

This Saturday afternoon there will be a 'garage jam’ at 209 Adams in Eveleth, which is located exactly behind Snickers Bar in Eveleth.

The session should start sometime in the afternoon, there is no real need to specify when, as you should be able to hear the event, no matter how far away you live.

Pictured here is the Perez family; Paco, Samantha, Elijah and (baby on board) Kaleb. Paco was practicing Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata at the time of this photo.

The revived Band is called Shattered Grave, and their music can be described as ‘brutal’, according to Mr. Perez.

They apparently have a large following in Duluth and Superior, where they had played for some time before.

If we can find a stage up here for them to play on, who knows how much bigger the ‘Music Scene’ can get around here!?

    Time for Battle

    P4160036

It’s that time of year for the DECC Battle of the Bands.

Shown below is Gary Mckeever, lead guitarist for Colmekill, who won the contest last year.

This time, Gary is returning as a judge, and will lend his critical and experienced ear to the competition.

If you think you can make it through the entire field of competition, Sunday is the day for you. Last year, we waited until the ‘final four’ played for top honors at Grandma’s Stage…

…a little more civil on the ears!

Welcome to ‘Scott’s World, Scott’s World’, pictured here is musician-welder Tim Baldonado and Scott Rolando at the rear entrance of Scott’s Underground Sound in Aurora.

If you’re looking for ‘a’ place to find that amp, cord or electronic item, why not go to ‘the’ place. Scott is recognized for his long standing position as one of the area’s leading ‘sound guys’, and has the facility to substantiate all claims.

You may need to find his shop from the front the first time, as seen from the corner, or visit his SO’s (Chris) framing and design business who’s mural (painted by her brother) is pictured here. Either entrance will bring you into a world you did not think existed here on the Range, and one you might want to browse through for awhile.
You may reach the business, if you’re patient, at 218-229-2107, or better yet, in person at 303 Main St N, Aurora.

Tim Baldonado, best known for his drumming in Trixx, has reinvented himself in a venue featuring his personal charm and social consciousness.

He periodically can be ‘captured’ live at Bonsai Tea Open Stage, the first and third Saturdays of the month.

Come and hear Tim’s ‘right-on’ social commentary via his acoustic strumming and heart softening vocals!

The Last Concert Days at the Auditorium

Take a look at this poster from 1964, which was presumably the last year for performances on the 'BIG STAGE', when various acts were moved to the Armory. This is a photo of Char Luoma with her husband, Ted, as a 'Rocker' (second from left, white coat).

Shortly after this period, the Auditorium became incorporated into the 'Arrowhead Shirt Factory' and housed the production of the pajama and shorts line.

Here is an example of the Arrow brand ad, artfully sophisticated for the times!

We are interested in hearing your story of the Auditorium days. This may include the significant time period when it housed the clothing factory and, between the two facilities in Eveleth and the others in Gilbert and Chisholm, employed 8,000 workers.
